Chapter 7

Sore and still smarting from Jackson’s treatment of me, I awoke the next morning in Peter’s bed. Lying on my side, I stared at the wall, my gaze fixed on the huge abstract painting that took up almost the entire wall. It had been a long and painful night filled with nightmares of what I’d been through and constant reminders of every blow dealt. Every movement brought new pain to each wound and sleeping on my left side was about the only position I could tolerate.

Thinking over the various moments of the sleepless night, I thought about Peter and his careful ministrations. I wouldn’t have thought him capable of being so tender and careful, so gentle and understanding, but he’d been more than that. I knew he’d spent a part of the night with me. Even though I’d dozed off, I was acutely aware of his presence the first portion of the night. He’d been so careful of my wounds, but several hours later, he’d gotten up and had ultimately slept elsewhere, leaving me the entire bed to myself. While a part of me had longed to have him at my side the whole night, I knew I was also too hurt to risk having him re-open a wound during his sleep.

A rattling sound, like metal against metal, brought my attention to what was happening outside the bedroom. Peter was already up and moving about. And then I caught a whiff. The tantalizing scents of breakfast sparked me to life, even helping me forget the pain my entire body endured. I sat up and took in a deep and delicious breath. Eggs, toasts, butter and of course coffee… I suddenly realized I was famished. I’d hardly eaten the day before and my stomach rumbled to remind me of that. Getting out of bed, I slipped on the silk robe and walked to the bedroom door. Left ajar, it offered me a peek at the cook at work. Wearing jeans, he was relaxed and at ease, but it was the bare torso that really caught my eye. Then I remembered… an MMA fighter. Yeah, he sure had the body of a fighter. Not overly bulky, his muscles were tight and lean. As he chopped green onions, the entire workings of his arms, his shoulders, even his back were mesmerizing. I could spend the day simply looking at him.

But my hunger prevailed and I headed out of the room and followed the scent of food to the kitchen. The dining room table was set with gorgeous white china trimmed with platinum, sparkling crystal stemware filled with orange juice and champagne, and gleaming flatware. A beautiful porcelain coffee pot sat in the center of the table spewing rich and aromatic steam from its spout. Bringing a splash of rich violet was a large crystal vase filled with tulips.

It was beautiful, sweet and so romantic. I wanted to burst.

“Hey, sleepy head,” Peter said when I came up to lean against the wall behind him.
